Vegetable Spraying Guide: Tomato, Chilli, Brinjal & Okra

Safe spraying for vegetables – sucking pests and virus vectors, fruit and shoot borers, blights and mildew – with pre-harvest waiting periods, nozzle setup and the right Masand sprayer.

SeasonAll year · nursery, transplanting, fruiting
Water volume150–250 L per acre depending on plant size
NozzleHollow-cone; adjustable nozzle for undersides of leaves
Best sprayer12–14 Ah battery sprayer; 2–5 L mini sprayer for nursery & kitchen garden

Vegetables are sprayed more often than any field crop, and the produce goes straight to the plate. That makes two things critical: spraying only when needed, and always respecting the pre-harvest interval (waiting period) printed on the label. Sucking pests matter early because they spread viruses; borers and blights matter at fruiting.

Spray calendar

  1. 1

    Nursery

    Before transplanting

    Target: Damping-off, early sucking pests

Light drench / spray with a mini sprayer. Cover the nursery with insect net where virus is a problem.

  2. 2

    After transplanting

    15–40 days

    Target: Thrips, whitefly, aphids, mites

Yellow & blue sticky traps first. Spray underside of leaves with a hollow-cone nozzle when numbers rise.

  3. 3

    Flowering & fruiting

    40 days onward

Target: Fruit borer, shoot & fruit borer (brinjal, okra)

Pheromone traps; remove and destroy bored fruits and shoots; spray at threshold.

  4. 4

    Disease watch

    Humid or rainy spells

Target: Early & late blight, powdery mildew, leaf spots

Protective fungicide before long wet spells; curative only at first symptoms.

  5. 5

    Harvest period

    Every picking

    Target: Residue safety

Pick first, then spray. Never harvest before the label waiting period is over.

⚠ Use only CIB&RC-registered products at the dose and water volume on the label, and follow your KVK / agriculture department for local pest thresholds. Wear gloves, mask and goggles; never eat, drink or smoke while spraying.

Pests & diseases to watch

Leaf curl virus

Curled, puckered leaves on chilli and tomato; spread by whitefly and thrips.

Fruit borer

Round holes in fruits with frass; larva inside.

Late blight

Dark water-soaked patches on leaves and fruit in cool, wet weather.

Sprayer tips for vegetables
