Soybean is the main kharif crop of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Most yield is lost in the first 45 days — to weeds, stem fly and girdle beetle — and later to leaf-eating caterpillars, whitefly-borne yellow mosaic and rust. Timely, well-covered sprays at the right stage protect yield far better than many late sprays.
Spray calendar
-
1
Pre-emergence weed control
0–3 days after sowingTarget: Grassy & broad-leaf weeds
Pre-emergence herbicide on moist soil. Flat-fan nozzle, walk at an even pace, do not overlap.
-
2
Post-emergence weed control
15–20 days after sowingTarget: Weeds at 2–4 leaf stage
Post-emergence herbicide registered for soybean. Flat-fan nozzle with a hood; avoid drift to neighbouring crops.
-
3
Early insect protection
20–35 daysTarget: Stem fly, girdle beetle, blue beetle
Insecticide as per label when damage is seen. Hollow-cone nozzle; cover the stem and lower leaves.
-
4
Leaf-eaters & whitefly
35–60 daysTarget: Semilooper, tobacco caterpillar, Helicoverpa, whitefly
Spray only when pests cross the economic threshold. Use pheromone traps to time it. Control whitefly early to limit yellow mosaic.
-
5
Disease protection
45–75 days (flowering to pod)Target: Rust, anthracnose, aerial blight, pod blight
Fungicide at first symptoms or as advised by KVK. The canopy is dense now — keep full volume so spray reaches inside.
⚠ Use only CIB&RC-registered products at the dose and water volume on the label, and follow your KVK / agriculture department for local pest thresholds. Wear gloves, mask and goggles; never eat, drink or smoke while spraying.
Pests & diseases to watch
Yellow patches on leaves; spread by whitefly. Pull out infected plants early.
Two ring-cuts on the stem; the top wilts and dries.
Maggot tunnels inside the stem; young plants wilt.
Brown powdery spots under leaves; leaves drop early.
Sprayer tips for soybean
- Spray herbicides only on moist soil and never in strong wind.
- Keep a separate, marked sprayer or wash thoroughly after herbicides.
- Install 4–5 pheromone traps per acre to decide when to spray.
- Rotate insecticide groups — do not repeat the same chemistry back to back.

Frequently asked
When should I spray herbicide in soybean?
Pre-emergence herbicides go on within 0–3 days of sowing on moist soil; post-emergence herbicides at 15–20 days when weeds have 2–4 leaves. Use a flat-fan nozzle and about 200 L of water per acre.
Which sprayer is best for soybean?
For up to about 10 acres a 12–14 Ah battery knapsack sprayer gives even coverage at low running cost. For bigger farms or custom spraying, a 4-stroke knapsack power sprayer covers more acres per day.
